NORTHWOOD GET FORTUNATE WIN

Northwood were far below their best when they visited Mill End in the Middlesex League on Saturday, but were fortunate to meet a team who were considerably poorer on the day.
After their brilliant performance at Hendon last week Northwood were expected to be far too strong for the home side. It was Mill End, though, who made the early running and Northwood couldn't adapt to the rock-hard conditions and the wind.
In the 16th minute Mill End look the lead when their inside-left scored with a header. This was the first time that North wood had failed to open the scoring this year, and the team had to pick themselves up.
Harvey prompted well, and with Gould and Godley, Northwood held their own in midfield. Up front it was a different story as the Woods failed to make use of Horsford’s complete dominance over the full-back.
Northwood equalised when Byrne put Horsford through, and he slotted the ball home. Woods should then have taken the lead when Byrne put the ball over from three yards.
In the second half Northwood began to get more on top and Madegan hit the post from 20 yards. Horsford beat the defence with forceful running and was twice unlucky not to score, as was Pearce, with a thundering 25 yards shot.
It took a beautiful cross by Harvey to set up the winner. Gould distracted the home defence and the ball ran to Horsford, who slipped the ball back to Gould, who made no mistake from six yards.
Northwood have now gone seven games without defeat, but they will have to produce some of their earlier season form to keep it up.
